Roman Verulamium, Christmas in St Albans & a Historic Cathedral City Walk
Step into nearly 2,000 years of history on a festive winter walk through St Albans! From Roman ruins and ancient legends to a magnificent cathedral and atmospheric historic streets, this is a fascinating walk through one of Hertfordshire’s most historic cities.
Starting from St Albans City, we head towards Verulamium, the Roman town on the outskirts of the city. Today, little remains of the ancient settlement, but its Roman walls, parkland and surrounding landscape offer glimpses into its remarkable past.
The River Ver, which gave Verulamium its name, once powered eleven waterwheels and helped support Hertfordshire’s famous watercress industry. The valley has also witnessed dramatic events, including the destruction of Verulamium by Boudica in 61 AD.
From Verulamium, we continue to St Albans Cathedral, whose impressive buildings were completed in 1088 using materials from the Roman town. The cathedral has witnessed centuries of turbulent history, including the Peasants’ Revolt and the Wars of the Roses, when Henry VI took refuge here after being wounded.
We then explore the historic town centre, soaking up the festive atmosphere and discovering the Christmas markets of St Albans.
