Explore Norman Rochester, medieval streets, historic pubs and the world of Charles Dickens.
Step into centuries of history on a day exploring Rochester’s remarkable landmarks, atmospheric streets and traditional English character.
Our first stop we head to Rochester Cathedral, whose origins traditionally date to 604.
Our next stop is Rochester Castle, one of England’s most impressive Norman fortresses. Following William the Conqueror’s victory at the Battle of Hastings in 1066, Norman rule reshaped England, bringing new castles and fortifications. Rochester’s great stone keep was begun around 1127, more than 60 years after the conquest. The castle later endured a dramatic siege in 1215, when King John’s forces fought to retake it from rebel barons. We’ll allow around 1–1.5 hours to explore the castle and enjoy its commanding views over the town and River Medway.
After our castle visit, it’s time to recharge with lunch at The George Vaults, a traditional pub on Rochester High Street, built above a remarkable medieval vaulted undercroft dating to around 1320–1325.
Refreshed, we’ll explore more of Rochester’s historic town centre, wandering past characterful old buildings, medieval lanes and places connected with Charles Dickens, who drew inspiration from the Medway towns for his stories. Along the way, we’ll discover Rochester’s literary heritage, architectural treasures and riverside atmosphere.
Before catching our train back to London, there’s the option to finish the day with a relaxing drink or coffee at a local pub or café — the perfect chance to unwind and share the day’s highlights.
This is a sociable day out for curious explorers who enjoy history, architecture and discovering somewhere new, without the formality of a traditional guided history tour.
